Kulturserver is a
non-commercial
online-community for regional culture developed as a
cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Culture in Lower
Saxony, Germany, the Institute for Cultural Politics at the
University of Hildesheim, Germany, and the Ponton European
Media Art Lab and launched online in February 1998.
Kulturserver Niedersachsen is supported by the Deutschen
Telekom AG and the Ministry of Science and Culture in Lower
Saxony in the framework of the Multimedia-Initiative
Niedersachsen.
Kulturserver is designed to use the Internet to support the
cultural scene by
building a network of artists, cultural institutions and
culturally-interested
individuals. Kulturserver offers a guide to navigation
through the different
cultural genres a region offers, such as architecture, fine
arts, education,
design, film and video, literature, music, new media,
handicrafts,
socio-culture, or dance and theatre. Kulturserver also aims
to give artists
joining the art market an infrastructure outside their usual
contacts.
Kulturserver allows users from the arts- and
cultural-community at large to
set up free homepages and to publish their work and/or
events with a unique
toolbox. Additional functionality serves the idea of a
community.
In contrast to the top-down approaches of many Net portals,
Kulturserver
works from the bottom-up by stimulating local and original
content. It is our firm
belief that while the Internet as a global network has
interesting content,
regional culture is more meaningful to people in their daily
lives.
